the bike racks of David Byrne

I’m not sure if I’ve seen these before but I came across them earlier today and I thought they were pretty special. There are 9 of these that are positioned around Manhattan and Brooklyn, made in conjunction with the New York City Department of Transportation & New York art gallery PaceWildenstein. There’s even a short ‘rackumentary‘ in which two guys visit the 9 rack locations, seeing how they are being used in situ – propping-up a hot dog stand, being sat on my a large lady or actually being used for parking bikes. Even if not all of the racks were being utilized it seems that it’s a great way to liven up otherwise boring pavements and give someone something to look at, though probably best if they are being used properly.
